Apple is the top OEM but Android is the top OS according to comScore report

September was a good month for Apple, there is no doubt about that. According to a recently released comScore report, at the end of September Apple was ranked at the number one smartphone manufacturer. The same report showed Android to be the most widely used operating system on smartphones. The report was released by comScore, Inc. This company focuses on global media measurement and analytics. The data from comScore MobiLens® and Mobile Metrix® was released on Friday and it shows major trends in the USA regarding the smartphone industry.

According to the comScore report in the previous trimester 192.4 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones. The majority of them owned an Apple manufactured smartphone. The comScore report shows that  43.6 percent of U.S. smartphone subscribers own smartphone manufactured by Apple. This makes the company the top OEM. As you would probably expect, the next in line in the OEM competition is Samsung. The South Korean tech giant ensured its second place with 27.6 percent of the market share. This is quite a lot less than Apple’s 43.6 percent but we have to take into consideration the fact that this report only concerns USA buyers. Elsewhere in the world the difference between Apple and Samsung is not as obvious. Other OEMs that ranked well are LG with 9.4 percent (up 1.1 percentage points from June), Motorola with 4.8 percent and HTC with 3.3 percent.

The smartphone platform market share on the other hand is not as favorable to Apple. According to the comScore report Android is installed on the majority of smartphones. To be more exact, Google’s operating system runs on approximately 52.3% of the smartphones owned by Americans. Apple’s iOS was ranked second, 43.6% of smartphones running on this operating system. There was a  decrease in iOS users’ number in the last closed trimester. While in June 44.1% of smartphone users owned devices running on Apple’s OS, by September their number got lower according to the comScore report. Microsoft and Blackberry are also in the report, but their market share doesn’t even come close to the market share of Android and Apple.

The comScore report doesn’t only limit to showing the top OEM and smartphone platform. The comScore report also indicates which are the top ranking smartphone apps. Facebook is definitely the most popular smartphone app, followed by Youtube. The comScore report also names Facebook Messenger, Google Play and Google Search as top ranking apps. According to the comScore report apps that are quite popular include Google Maps, Gmail, Pandora Radio, Instagram and Yahoo Stocks among others.

Since the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus were released at the end of the analyzed trimester it is likely that these numbers are not reflecting the reality of the ongoing trimester also. It is probable that the top ranking OEM is still Apple, but it is possible that their market share is even larger. At the same time, there were a lot of Android smartphones released in October that probably consolidate the ranking of Android in the comScore report that will be released after the end of the year.

We are eager to see the comScore report that will be released following the last trimester of 2015. Holiday sales and the release of smartphones in October might bring serious changes to the current status quo.
