Montblanc Summit is the Company’s First Luxury Smartwatch

Smartwatches took over the wearable market years ago. Even so, luxury watches manufacturers didn’t seem to be eager to get in line. They continued delivering the high-quality traditional accessories everyone knew. In the past few years, however, it seems these manufacturers had a change of heart. The latest timepiece manufacturer company to deliver a smartwatch is Montblanc. The launch of the Montblanc Summit comes only days after TAG Heuer launched its second device of this kind, the Connected Modular 45. This certainly looks like the race is on. Traditional manufacturers prepare to take their slice of the pie on the smartwatch market.

What first strikes us about the Montblanc Summit, apart from the quality build is its size. The watches case measures 46mm in diameter and 12.5mm in height. No one can say that this is a small accessory. Naturally, the company needed to go big size-wise in order to fit a decent battery and a number of sensors into the watch. However, the size of the wearable might be a problem for numerous users. Besides the fact that it could look strange on people who have small hands and thin wrists,  it can prove to be quite uncomfortable to wear. On the other hand, the quality of the materials could surpass this problem for many users.

As far as the design goes, this was inspired by the company’s 1858 collection. The smartwatch has a classy design with a round watch case and a button on the side. This looks like a crown, but it really isn’t. The smartwatch is available in stainless steel, black, and a two-tone option. For the really pretentious clients, there is also a titanium watch frame. Users can also choose from a great variety of straps. Calf leather, natural rubber, and alligator skin are just some of the options customers can choose from. Depending on the combination of materials, the price of the smartwatch can vary from $890 to $1,070. If this is not the price of a luxury smartwatch, then we don’t know what is.

The Montblanc Summit features a 1.39-inch AMOLED display with 400 x 400 resolution and runs on Android wear 2.  The gadget comes with Foursquare, Uber, and Runtastic apps preloaded, alongside a World Timer app. The device features Google Assistant, so users can dictate messages and ask for information, directions or translations. The smartwatch’s software doesn’t really make it a luxury wearable. To be honest, it offers the same features as more affordable smartwatches in terms of apps and software.

The device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor and it includes 512MB of RAM and 4GB internal storage. the smartwatch has a 300mAh battery, and a magnetic charging cradle. The Summit offers a number of sensors, including accelerometer, gyroscope, and heart rate monitor, along with a barometer and electronic compass. Unfortunately for some, it doesn’t feature LTE, GPS, NFC or Android Pay. At this price range, people could wish for the whole package. However, the materials used to build are the ones that make the difference. Whether it is worth its price or not, smartwatch users will decide.
