As the top Indian telecom operator pursues broadband market share, Jio Platforms launched the AirFiber, a wireless plug-and-play 5G hotspot, on Monday.
Last year, Reliance introduced the Jio AirFiber to replace wired broadband and expand its 5G user base. From September 19, the device will be available. Pricing has not been announced.
We can currently connect 15,000 premises per day, but Jio AirFiber can boost this to 150,000. “This is a 10-fold increase, expanding our addressable market over the next three years to over 200 million high-paying homes and premises,” Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani said at the annual general meeting Monday.
The Jio Home app lets users manage, grant, and restrict Wi-Fi access. Reliance’s AI-driven Proactive Quality Monitoring feature optimizes the Wi-Fi network based on usage patterns and prevents “most issues even before they occur.”
To compete with Jio, Bharti Airtel launched Xstream AirFiber this month. The Xstream AirFiber 100 Mbps plan costs $10 per month with a six-month commitment and a $30 refundable security deposit.
Last year, Jio launched 5G services in India, which now have over 50 million subscribers and cover 96% of census towns.
The operator wants to bring its advanced cellular network to “every town” in India by 2023. At its annual meeting, Jio announced that it has over 450 million subscribers and that the average user consumes 25GB of data per month.
