Elon Musk’s Neuralink successfully implants a brain chip into a human subject

In a significant development for Elon Musk’s Neuralink project, the tech billionaire made an announcement yesterday regarding the startup’s successful implantation of a brain chip into a human subject. This marks a major milestone for the project. In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Musk shared some news without going into much detail, but he did mention that the recipient is “recovering well”.

“The latest findings indicate encouraging progress in detecting neuron spikes,” Musk shared on the social media platform he acquired in 2022. The peaks of electrical activity that neurons produce are known as spikes. However, the success of the procedure and the potential outcomes for the patient remain uncertain at this stage.

Neuralink is currently working on a revolutionary brain-computer interface implant that aims to enable individuals to effortlessly control various devices using nothing but their thoughts. It appears that the company aims to assist individuals with paralysis in operating equipment that can enhance their communication and mobility.

On the other hand, the potential of this technology also brings about exciting possibilities, like brain-to-brain communication, thought-hacking, and the potential to extend life by transferring old brains into youthful bodies. These imaginative applications are still far in the future, but the beginning of Neuralink’s first human trial is bound to spark excitement and speculation.
The US Food and Drug Administration gave the PRIME Study approval last year. Neuralink has announced that their trial will utilize a robot to perform the surgical connection of the implant’s delicate threads to the motor cortices of the participants.
In light of recent regulatory violations, the company’s announcement regarding the safety evaluation of the procedure is of utmost importance. Ensuring the well-being of individuals involved is a top priority, and this study aims to shed light on the matter. During inspections of Neuralink’s facilities in the early part of last year, officials from the Department of Transportation discovered that some hazardous chemicals had been packaged incorrectly.
Neuralink has faced persistent allegations of animal cruelty during its initial macaque experiments. The device has caused severe harm to several monkeys, according to complaints made to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). These innocent animals have experienced infections, brain swelling, paralysis, seizures, and depression as a result.
According to the allegations, a number of monkeys had to be euthanized due to the harm caused by the brain chip, as reported to the Securities and Exchange Commission. Musk has made it clear that no animals have ever perished as a result of a Neuralink implant, according to his public statements.
