Nowadays everyone buys mechanical keyboard companies. Corsair outdid them by buying its own mechanical keyboard firm. Today, the Fremont, California-based peripheral company revealed it is buying “certain assets” from Drop for an undisclosed, all-cash purchase.
Drop CEO Jef Holove announced on his blog that Corsair had acquired Drop. “I am sure front-of-mind for you is what this will mean for Drop and our focus on our discerning, engaged enthusiast community – especially at a time when we’ve been watching other players in the community struggle or fold. I’ll explain why we think this decision is good for us, you, and the hobby.
The CEO called the Portland-based company “small but mighty” for its keyboards, keycaps, and audio accessories. It creates excellent mechanical keyboards. Drop Shift has been my keyboard for months. The company’s Lord of the Rings and Marvel keycaps are also well-known.
“Personalized Keyboards that can be modified by the consumer is one of the fastest growing trends in the gaming peripheral space,” Corsair CEO Andy Paul said in a release. “Drop is a leader in this space, and with Corsair’s global footprint, we expect to significantly grow the Drop brand worldwide. We’re delighted to offer Drop’s enthusiast community specialized Corsair and Elgato products.”
Since 2018, Corsair has released Elgato-branded gaming products. Drop will remain its own brand while having numerous mechanical keyboards.
“Corsair will help our team deliver more of what you love. Our new items will delight Corsair as much as we did. Holove says community favorites will collaborate. “A world-class supply chain will improve product delivery. With a global logistical capability, we’ll also be able to better serve all of you outside the US who merely want a simpler, more inexpensive way to receive the things you desire.”
