It’s a well-known fact that Sony has been recently hacked, and the amount of information pouring out is considerable, to say the least. While the hack didn’t specifically target Sony’s mobile branch, there were some breadcrumbs leaked, among which the potential first render for the upcoming Sony Xperia Z4. The Xperia series is Sony’s primary smartphone line-up, with the Z line representing the flagship, high-end segment. This year’s Xperia Z3 was particularly impressive, which immediately removed any shadow of a doubt that Sony would be following up with a Z4 in 2015.
The Sony Xperia Z3 was officially announced and released in September this year. Generally, Sony releases its Xperia Z models in the fall season. Next year will probably be no exception, as leaked information clearly suggests a tie between Sony’s Xperia Z4 launch and the upcoming James Bond movie, Spectre, which is officially confirmed for a 6th of November release. Sony generally likes to market its products in James Bond movies, so expecting Daniel Craig to use an Xperia Z4 is not a far-fetched idea. In other words, we can expect the Z4 to land in September/October 2015, with aggressive promotion via blockbuster movies, including the adventures of the iconic British spy. With the Xperia phones always benefiting from top-notch visual appeal, it’s only fitting that Bond would be using a Z4. Xperia Z4.
Contradicting rumors would suggest that the Xperia Z4 will launch earlier in 2015, most likely at March’s Mobile World Congress. If this is the case, the Xperia Z4 will be launched in a time-frame when the new Samsung Galaxy S6 and the LG G4 are also expected to show up, meaning Sony’s flagship will be up against some extremely stiff competition. This is however unlikely to happen. In one of the leaked e-mails (correspondence of Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO, Michael Lynton), an initial render of the upcoming phone was included. The e-mail was sent as a marketing pitch, including details about Sony’s marketing budget, the Xperia Z4, and important names from the James Bond movie, including Sam Mendes, Daniel Craig as well as Barbara Broccoli, long-time James Bond producer.
The render shows a futuristic and elegant looking smartphone. Sony has been pushing hard to refine and reduce the size of the Xperia’s edges, and the render seems to take this to the next level. We have no doubts the Xperia Z4 will look stunning. Unfortunately, there are no indications about the phone’s hardware and specs. While always top of the line, Xperias are known to be steeply priced, and the Sony Xperia Z4 will certainly have to provide more than just looks or on-screen time in Craig’s hands if it wants to be a success.
