WeChat launches Apple’s online store in China

Tuesday’s Tencent-owned WeChat app announced Apple’s online store. WeChat’s mini-programs, which include e-commerce, financial services, and transportation, have brought the Cupertino company’s store to the app.

This store sells iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, and Macs. As Reuters notes, Apple already has a store on Alibaba’s Tmall retail platform, Tencent’s rival. Apple tried live commerce in May.

Apple’s China market is important. Counterpoint expects that the iPhone 13 series dominated China’s top three best-selling phones in 2022.

According to a Counterpoint research, Apple held a 20% market share in Q1 2023, up 2% from the same quarter a year earlier.

Apple is aiming to diversify its manufacturing by moving out of China. JP Morgan analysts predicted that by 2025, 25% of iPhone production would relocate to India and 20% to Vietnam.
