Twitter announced Tuesday that its API is free for public announcements like weather alerts, transportation updates, and emergency warnings.
The company said verified government or public-owned services posting public utility alerts will receive free API usage.
One of the most important use cases for the Twitter API has always been public utility. Verified gov or publicly owned services who tweet weather alerts, transport updates and emergency notifications may use the API, for these critical purposes, for free.

The social network introduced new API pricing tiers last month. Free API tier users had 1,500 tweets per month, while $100 basic tier users had 3,000. PSA accounts needed more restrictions.
Last month, the National Weather Services (NWS) account tweeted that its automated tweets were limited. The New York Metro Transit Service (MTS) will also end its Twitter public alert system.
Several tools were greatly affected by API pricing changes. Microsoft removed Twitter from its advertiser social media sharing tool in April. Flipboard also announced its Twitter integration was broken.
WordPress announced last week that Jetpack Social won’t automatically tweet posts.
Elon Musk & Co. has made API usage free for government-run services, but disaster management accounts that relied on Twitter are unclear.
